“I can’t marry you.” was her firm reply. I was trying to persuade her for last two years. And for last two years, she was denying it. Two years back I first proposed Nomi. Since then I am constantly and continuously trying to persuade her. But she has been firm since her very first denial. I have not been able to understand why. In fact, I am rich, belong to a well-to-do family and have been earning well. I joined as a senior executive after completing my Masters in Business Administration from a premium institute of the country. Within five years, I am able to climb career ladder well with a monthly earning in high 6-figures. I am heading a business vertical of a large MNC. I was not aware then that absence of TaxPledge would spoil my life in a big way.

“But why?” I was adamant to get a reason this time. It was the height of my patience. “And if you don’t tell me the reason, I will jump straightaway from the 17th floor of my office”, I told her over the phone.

“I am leaving for Nevada next week. I have got a job there and have decided to settle there,” Nomi replied. “and if you really want to marry me, you will have to move to the United States for my sake. Get a job there, settle down and we can then marry and live together.”

I was fine with that. There was no restriction on my parents. I was given so much liberty to live my life in my own style. Hence, I decided to move to the United States, there and then only, but didn’t know what big hurdles were waiting for me. I was still not aware of the flaw in my TaxPledge.

Do You Have Your TaxPledge in Place

“Sorry, you can’t even apply for a visa.” The embassy guy told me at the application counter. “Since you have not filled your ITRs for last three years, I can’t even issue you a form to apply for a visa.” I was further told. I wish somebody had taught me a TaxPledge lesson a few years back.

I went to Visa officer but he sounded the same note and in the same tone. in fact, he gave me a lesson of my life. “If you can’t be sincere to your country, why any other country should trust you? And even in some untoward event, you require a loan from any financial institution in your country, you will never get it. It is only because you have not been a responsible citizen of your country.”
