Model Solar City Master Plan for Chandigarh City Prepared

Almost a year back Ministry of New and Renewable Energy approved an important proposed master plan. This master plan is very special one. It is bound to change the image of our country in the whole world. It will increase out footsteps in building a Green World. An effort to decrease carbon footprints. This master plan is to develop 55 solar cities in the country. Three of these are in the national capital region. Eight of these cities have been assigned a special task of this mission. Each of the eight cities is to develop as Model Solar City. These cities are in 27 states of the country.

The list of these 55 cities is available on ministry’s website and is listed below. 19 of these cities have a sanction of approval in principle. These cities are getting a regular release of money for the development:

Out of these cities, master plans are done for 46 cities. These cities include Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Surat (all in Gujarat), Thane, Shirdi, Nagpur (all in Maharashtra), Agra, Imphal. Chandigarh, and so on.

Model Solar City Master Plan

A large number of consultants are there on the panel for the creation of these master plans for solar cities. Each model solar city is the responsibility of these experts. As per earlier reports, these efforts are there from 2009. Nagpur, Gandhinagar, Chandigarh, and Mysore are on the line of becoming Model Solar City.

With the onging efforts in this direction, Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines made an important announcement today i.e. July 28th 2016. He informed the Lok Sabha today evening in a written note that master plan for making Chandigarh a Model Solar City has been prepared. This has been under the ‘Development of Solar Cities’ programme of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. In this regard, the solar city cell has also been formed.

As per the information released by the Minister, the UT Administration has taken some meaningful steps in this regard. The UT Administration, Chandigarh has empaneled around 50 Solar Power Aggregators. Residents of Chandigarh can contact these agencies to install Rooftop Solar Power Plant. Each such installation entitle these residents a subsidy of 30%. As per the official records, solar rooftop power plants of around 8 MWp (Mega Watt power) capacity are there on 145 Government buildings.
